What You Need To Know About Autism

Autism is a demanding and relentless disorder. Parents, who are often blamed for the seeming lack of parental control, need a support team that understands the entire scope of needs. The child often overrides the daily demands placed upon the family. For example, a trip to the store may not seem like a good idea considering the stress of the day on the tired and ready-to-melt-down autistic child, but it may be vital to provide the necessary goods for the family.
There are no seemingly absolute answers for children on the autism spectrum. Children's conditions and abilities differ widely. Family needs and resources greatly affect the outcome of any recommended treatment and hope for progress. Autism creates the need for special services in nutrition, daily life skills, social interaction, medication, education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language development, and more. Throughout all these, early intervention has been a focus.

A Message from Janis Miskimins

Remember, we are all learning together. My son is now 12 years old. I scramble to keep up with his emotional, developmental, cognitive...all of his needs one step at a time. Each day is important. Each day renews your hope and love for your child.
I encourage you to talk to your child—no matter what—talk to your child. Sing to your child. Take everything you want to say and put it to a gentle rap kind of music. Watch and see if your child hears you better when you sing your words of encouragement rather than say them. Repetition and song! There is power to be found here!
May God bless and direct you. Prayer has been our best daily tool!
